We use 3D foot contour capture digitizers and CAD CAM Mills, to prescribe and manufacture custom made foot orthotics / orthoses.
This is a short film describing how we have been using a 2D photo of the plantar aspect of the foot with the subtalar joint axis drawn on (taken with a ruggedised A3 photo scanner) overlaid on the 3D shape /cast of the foot (taken with the contact digitizer) to enable good placement of a MOSI or Medial Oblique Shell Inclination described by Harradine, Collins, Webb & Bevan.

This paper has been a great encouragement to us, and we are very keen to show how we are using our CAD CAD manufacturing systems to prescribe and manufacture this type of orthotic.

The second day at BSS2008 hasn’t been a disappointment.

Nat Padhiar gave a very exciting lecture on Foot & Ankle Injection therapies, and he managed not to swear this year.

Emma Cowley spoke on mechanics of heel height, and the very softly spoken Dr Chris Nester discussed his bone pin studies of fore’n'midfoot motion…. like all great scientists he has stepped up and had screws inserted in his foot too!

Matt Lancaster spoke on Achilles tendinopathy, and overviewed all that were were learning at Hakan Alfredsons lectures on the 18th of April this year. He also spoke on Complexity and Clinical Reasoning, an area I will be investigating for myself more thoroughly in the not too distant future.

Simon Bartold spoke about some exciting new developments in shoes for medial compartment OA knee pain, and then gave a Plantar Fasciitis presentation, on a different taping technique and some great cadaver research findings.

Dr Bouche.. presented many case studies of Foot and Ankle presentations, and has created a great new market in Chinese Finger traps in the UK podiatry market.

Here we are at the Rx Labs Biomechanics Summer School 2008, at the very posh Heythrop Park
We have had some very interesting lectures and debate on a variety of biomechanics topics.

Dr Richard Bouche, spoke on Lesser Metatarsophalangeal Joint Instability: A rational approach… We were blown away, the conference fee was worth it just for that lecture. He went on later in the morning to speak on Exercise Induced Leg Pain… and just scratched the surface as far as the handouts were concerned.

Simon Bartold spoke on Estrogen alters the mechanical behaviour of the human Achilles tendon in vivo….More gems of teaching and research… Simon also went on to discuss proprioception and potential developments in proprioceptive footwear/midsoles and adaptive shoe designs for the future from ASICs….

More to come tonight from exciting discussions and of course more lecturesand workshops tomorrow…

Martin Jenkins…. Supported by Andrew Jenkins & Charles Tovey… 3/4 of the Bartholomew Way Clinic & Paddocks Healthcare Clinic Crews
